Troubleshooting

Most issues fall into one of these five buckets. Click to expand.

Blocks aren't being tracked when I walk

This is almost always a Location permission issue. Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Blocks and confirm it's set to Always (for auto-tracking) or While Using (for manual). Also make sure Precise Location is on — without it we can't tell which block you're on.

If permissions look right but blocks still don't register, restart the app (force-quit and reopen). Still stuck? Email us your iOS version and we'll dig in.

Auto-tracking is draining my battery

Auto-tracking uses iOS's significant-location framework, which costs roughly 1-3% per day for most users. If you are seeing more than that, check that Background App Refresh is enabled (Settings → General → Background App Refresh → Blocks) — when it's off, the app falls back to continuous GPS, which is more expensive.

Or switch to manual mode from the Map tab — long-press the START WALK bubble to toggle. You only spend battery on walks you start yourself.

I walked the same block twice but it only counted once

Each block counts once toward your lifetime total — the goal is coverage, not repetition. But the heatmap view tracks how often you walk each block; your favorites burn brighter over time. Note: a block only completes when you've walked all its surrounding street segments — walking the same street twice doesn't substitute for walking the other three.

My streak reset and I definitely walked yesterday

Streaks count based on your device's local timezone. If you walked just before midnight and the location ping arrived a few minutes after, the walk may have landed on the new day. Email hello@nycblocks.com with the date and rough time and we'll restore the streak.

I want to delete my account

You can delete your account from inside the app: Profile → Edit profile → Delete account. Or use the web form on this page. All your data is purged within 30 days.
